While updating your progress on a project have you ever notice a gap in your activity bar in Gantt chart? It can be because of the following reasons :

1) Data date of the project is earlier than the Remaining Start date of the activity (which doesn’t happen that often)

2) Using Retained logic and activity been updated is out of sequence (happens most of the time)

Lets see how we can solve these problems:

1) Data date of the project is earlier than the Remaining Start date of the activity

This happens if your calendar has a non-working period in it. Say such as you have a 5 day working calendar and the activity is not working on those 2 days. Solution is to change the calendar or change the data date to the working day.

2) Using Retained Logic

The gap in an activity bar can come if you are using Retained Logic as scheduling option instead of Progress Override and your activity is progressing out of sequence. To get more clarity on this check this post on Scheduling Options.  You can use Progress override and the gap will go away.

In case you don’t want to use Progress Override then you can change the bar filter to correct the gap. You will need to do the following steps:

(i) Goto Views>Bars

(II) Choose Actual Work and change the timescale to Current Bar.

The gap closes once you choose this option

I would like to highlight that this is a temporary solution and you should either choose Progress Override or schedule your activity with correct sequence.
