In this post we will look at how we can use “Duration Type” options on our projects. These options are used for calculations when we assign resources to the activities

First thing to know is that these options control the following equation;

Original or Planned Duration = (Budgeted or Planned Units) / (Budgeted or Planned Units/Time)

1) Fixed Units/Time

2) Fixed Duration & Units/Time

3) Fixed Units

4) Fixed Duration & Units

The above activity has following attributes; Budgeted units = 40, Original Duration =5

1) Fixed Units/Time

Duration Type

Change Units

Change Duration

Change Units/Time

Fixed Units/Time

Duration

Units

Duration

When we choose this option Units/Time for the activity gets fixed.

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

(i) Change Original Duration from 5 to 10

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

10 * 8 = Budgeted Units = 80

(ii) Change Units from 40 to 20

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

Original Duration = 20/8 = 2.5 days

(iii) Change Units/Time from 8 to 10

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

Original Duration = 40/10 = 4 days

This option can be used for activities where the rate of work is fixed for a resource. Say a consultant or Coding activity for a programmer. Then if the number of working hrs. on the job increase then original duration of the activity changes automatically and vice versa

2) Fixed Duration & Units/Time

Duration Type

Change Duration

Change Units

Fixed Duration & Units/Time

Units

Units/Time

Units

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

In this option both attributes Duration & Unit/Time get fixed for the activity

(i) Change Original Duration from 5 to 10

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

10 = Budgeted Units/8; Budgeted Units = 80

(ii) Change Units from 40 to 20

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

5 = 20 / Budgeted Units/Time = 4/d

(iii) Change Unit/Time from 8 to 10

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

5 = Budgeted Units / 10 = 50

This option can be used for activities where Duration of the activity & rate is fixed, for example, a coding activity for a programmer with a fixed duration.

3) Fixed Units

Duration Type Change Duration Change Units Change Units/Time
Fixed Units Units/Time Duration Duration

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

In this option Budgeted Units for the activity are fixed

(i) Change Original Duration from 5 to 10

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

10 = 40 / Budgeted Unit/Time = 4/d

(ii) Change Units from 40 to 20

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

Original Duration = 20 /8 = 2.5 days

(iii) Change Unit/Time from 8 to 10

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

Original Duration = 40 / 10 = 4 days

This option can be used on activities where the number of resource units are fixed.

4) Fixed Duration & Units

Duration Type Change Duration Change Units Change Units/Time
Fixed Duration & Units Units/Time Unit s/Time Units

In this option Duration & Budgeted Units are fixed

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

(i) Change Original Duration from 5 to 10

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

10 = 40 / Budgeted Units/Time = 4/d

(ii) Change Units from 40 to 20

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

5 = 20 / Budgeted Units/Time = 4/d

(iii) Change Unit/Time from 8 to 10

Original Duration = Budgeted Units / Budgeted Units/Time

5 = Budgeted Units / 10 = 50

This option can be used in case where both Duration and Units are fixed, as in the rate at which a resource can work on the activity can be changed.
